Mask Quote-Personal Response (Extra Credit)
"Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth." -Buddha
This quote really stood out to me and I really love it because of how true it is. The truth can never be hidden forever, and will always eventually be revealed. The sun and the moon might hide behind the clouds or the darkness, but they will never be hidden forever. Truth is exactly the same. I think this relates especially to people's personalities and character. Many times people are very good at hiding their bad traits and hide their true self by acting so nice and pleasant. However, the truth always comes out and once you get to know them, their true self will be revealed. This quote made me think about people in relationships, because you could be in a relationship with someone and think that they are amazing and such great people. But when you get to know someone really well, and you need to share your true emotions and feelings with one another, you are able to see who they really are in that situation. You could be really good friends with someone for a while, but suddenly their true personalities are revealed and who they really are is completely different from how they act. The thing with truth is that it always comes out, and despite people's efforts to put on a mask/face to impress others or hide their flaws, it's impossible to keep it up forever. I have personally met with and become friends with people who acted a certain way, concealing their true character, and I really thought that that was their true selves. But when placed in a different situation, or when tested, their reaction and behavior was not at all who I thought they were, and I was utterly shocked with the revelation of what they were really like. People will act differently around people that they want to fit in with or impress, but when they no longer have to put up an act, that is when you see who they really are. This quote also relates to the current state of the world. We have thought and believed that our society has become more accepting, less racist, and a more unified nation, however this turns out to not be the case. With the change in presidency and the tumult that is occurring now, the truth has been revealed on the true nature of our nation. So many people have emerged publicly with horrifically racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic views and comments. Before, these people thought that they were the minority who had these opinions and were afraid of being shamed, and therefore kept silent about their true feelings. However, now more than ever, people are realizing that there are so many people with these views and are therefore ripping off their masks and openly expressing their true hatred. This is so terrifying but it shows how the truth comes out. These racist groups feel empowered by others to stand up and show their true characters, showing how America is really not as accepting and united as we had hoped.
